The final days of life — often called the active dying phase or journey's end — can be both exhausting and emotionally overwhelming for family and caregivers alike. At the same time, these moments can also hold opportunities for connection, reflection, and even beauty with loved ones. During this time, the dying person may or may not be aware of their surroundings, but families are often present around the clock, keeping vigil and offering comfort. Having the additional support of an End-of-Life Doula (EOLD) during this transitional phase can bring reassurance and steadiness. My support may include practical guidance and education for physical, emotional, respite or spiritual needs (within my abilities) as death becomes imminent. This can be offered in person (the ideal setting) or virtually through phone calls, texts, video calls, emails, or scheduled online meetings — providing care and presence in whatever way best supports the family.
